1933 – 1933 – A Turning Point in Art and History
In 1933, Calder left Paris to return to the United States with his wife Louisa, partly due to the political context in Europe. The artist Marcel Duchamp had named his animated sculptures “mobiles” in 1931, a name that remained in the dictionary. During a final exhibition in Paris, Calder notably presented Shark and Whale (Requin et baleine), a sculpture in unstable equilibrium. His friend Jean Arp suggested naming his static and motionless works “stabiles”.
